Planning a Curbless or Walk-In Shower in Northeast Florida

A curbless shower installation comes down to one structural question before tile or glass get decided: can the floor in that spot drop low enough to build the slope a shower needs, with no curb there to make up the difference. In a wood framed house with a raised floor, that means recessing the subfloor between the joists or building the surrounding floor up around it. In a slab on grade house, most of Northeast Florida, it means cutting the concrete out and re pouring it lower, usually the easier of the three. Everything else in a zero entry walk-in shower follows from that first answer.
Why does a curbless shower need the floor to drop?
A shower floor slopes from its edges down toward a drain so water actually moves instead of standing, and in a curbed shower that slope happens entirely inside a shallow pan sitting a little proud of the bathroom floor, with the curb keeping that raised, sloped surface from spilling onto the dry floor. Take the curb away and the shower floor and the bathroom floor become one continuous plane at the doorway, so the only way to still build in a working slope is to drop the whole shower area down before the pan ever goes in, low enough that the high point of that slope lands flush with the surrounding floor instead of proud of it. Skip that step and you either get a hidden lip that defeats the point of going curbless, or a slope with nowhere to fall from.
What are the three ways to lower a bathroom floor for a curbless shower?
There are three ways to get that drop, and which one applies depends entirely on what the house is built on rather than on preference. Two apply to a house with a framed, raised floor. The third applies to a slab, and it is the one most homes in this part of Florida will actually use.
Recessing the subfloor between the joists
In a wood framed house, a carpenter builds a shallow pocket into the floor structure right at the shower location, either hanging the subfloor lower between the joists or running shorter joists in that bay tied into headers on either side, so there is enough depth for the drain, the slope and the waterproofing membrane before tile ever goes down. How much depth is available depends on the joists already in that house, and this is a structural change decided and framed before drywall goes up, not a finish decision made later.
Building the whole bathroom floor up
When there isn’t enough joist depth to recess the shower far enough on its own, the surrounding bathroom floor gets built up instead, with extra framing or a thicker mud bed so the whole room sits a little higher and the shower only has to drop a small amount relative to that new floor rather than a large amount relative to the old one. It buys the needed depth without touching structural joists, at the cost of a transition somewhere else in the room, at a doorway or a closet threshold, where the raised floor meets the rest of the house.
Cutting and re-pouring a slab
In a slab on grade house, which is most of what gets built across St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, Nocatee and the surrounding area, the shower floor isn’t framed at all, it’s concrete sitting on the ground. Getting the drop means saw cutting the slab out of the shower footprint, excavating enough to reset the drain line at the depth and fall the design calls for, and re pouring that section at whatever elevation the slope needs. It is genuinely simpler than either framed option, because concrete on grade gives you room to work with that a floor joist doesn’t.
Can you put a curbless shower on a slab, and is it really easier?
Yes, and it is usually the easier of the three paths, which surprises people who assume a slab is more rigid to work with than a framed floor. A floor joist is only so deep, and dropping it further than that depth allows means engineering a header, sistering in new framing, or reworking the span before the shower ever gets to waterproofing. A slab has no joist to run out of, so cutting it out and re pouring at the depth the drain and slope actually need is standard renovation work rather than a structural redesign. The one thing worth checking before any concrete gets cut is what runs underneath it, supply and drain lines, and depending on the slab, tensioned cable, so the cut gets planned around what is actually there instead of assumed.
Linear drain or center drain: which one fits a curbless design?
Both work, but they solve the slope differently and that changes the tile layout on top of them. A center drain slopes the floor down toward one point in the middle from all four sides, so every tile cut near it is a compound angle, which is manageable with small tile or mosaic that can flex around a multi directional slope but gets visually busy and harder to execute cleanly with large format tile. A linear drain runs along one edge, usually the back or a side wall, and the floor only has to slope in a single direction to reach it. That single plane slope is what lets a curbless shower use large format tile without odd cuts, and it also tends to be easier to keep watertight because there are fewer transitions in the membrane to get right.
What does the waterproofing have to get right with no curb?
Nearly everything, because there is nothing else backing it up if it fails. In a curbed shower the curb acts as a fail safe: if the membrane has a weak spot or the slope is slightly off somewhere, water that gets past it still has to climb over the curb before reaching the rest of the bathroom. A curbless shower has no second line of defense, so the membrane has to run continuously with no gaps, it has to climb every wall to a real height, and the slope has to actually deliver water to the drain rather than leaving a low spot where it can sit. Because the shower floor and the room floor share one plane, most curbless installations extend the waterproofing well past the shower opening so any splash or overflow lands on a protected surface instead of a subfloor that was never meant to get wet. A mistake here rarely shows up on day one. It shows up as a soft spot in the floor or a stain on the ceiling below, later.
How far does splash actually travel without a curb?
Further than most people expect, and it depends almost entirely on where the fixtures point relative to the opening. A wall mounted showerhead angled into the back corner keeps nearly all of its spray inside the wet area. A rain head mounted directly over an open entry, or a handheld used loosely, will throw water well past where a curb would have stopped it. That is why most curbless and zero entry showers pair the open feel that makes them attractive with a fixed glass panel positioned at the entry, tall enough to block direct spray without enclosing the whole opening, rather than going fully open with no glass at all. Where a shower does stay fully open, the fixture placement and the extended waterproofed floor around it are doing the job the curb used to do, and both get decided before the plumbing rough in, not at the tile stage.
Why do the bench, niche and grab bar blocking get decided at framing?
Because all three depend on solid backing inside the wall that has to go in before the wall closes up, and a wall that is already tiled cannot have a stud added to it without demolition. A bench needs its framing sized and positioned before any waterproofing membrane goes over it, whether it ends up a framed seat or a floating tiled ledge on brackets. A niche needs a stud bay that is genuinely open at the height and width wanted, checked against whatever plumbing or wiring already runs through that wall, plus its own small waterproofing pan built in at the framing stage so it never becomes a leak point. Blocking for a grab bar, even for a homeowner with no near term plan to use one, is solid backing set into the studs at the right height so a bar can be mounted securely whenever it is wanted, without opening a finished wall to go looking for something to screw into.
Does a curbless shower need its own ventilation?
It needs more capacity than a standard stall does, because water spreads across more floor and evaporates off a larger area with nothing containing it to one small footprint. An exhaust fan sized for a curbed shower stall is often undersized for a curbless or wet room style layout, where the whole floor, not just a small pan, is wet after every use. The fan has to be sized to the room rather than to the shower, and it needs to run long enough afterward to actually clear that humidity, which matters in a Florida climate where trapped moisture behind tile and drywall is already a mold risk before a wide open wet floor adds to it.
What’s the single most common place a bathroom gets built wrong?
This is. Getting a curbless shower’s floor to slope correctly to the drain while landing perfectly flush with the surrounding room, at the same plane as the door and the rest of the floor, asks the framer, the plumber, the waterproofer and the tile setter to all work off the same number. If any one of them is off, even slightly, the result is either a hidden ridge that undoes the point of going curbless, or a floor that lets water track out into the room every time it’s used. A curbed shower has some built in margin for that kind of error. A curbless one does not, which is exactly why every trade needs to be planned and coordinated against a single floor plan before framing starts, instead of each one solving its own piece of it separately.
Is a curbless shower only useful for aging in place?
No, and for most people planning one, that isn’t even the reason they want it. A flush, curbless shower reads as a clean, spa style architectural choice regardless of who’s using it, which is why so many homeowners with no mobility concern at all choose one purely for how it looks and how easy it is to clean, with no pan lip to scrub around.
